Student Leadership Experience

Join IMEA for the 2015 Student Leadership Experience, November 14-15, 2014. This weekend event, geared toward students in 8th through 12th grades is an excellent opportunity to hone leadership skills through music.

Friday November 14

Friday November 14
Student Leadership Workshop with Dr. Tim

Work with the man who is the author of this powerful leadership program. It is hard-hitting, based on life-skills, and certain to make a measurable contribution to the health and welfare of your band, orchestra, or choir. The emphasis of the session is about self-development in order to properly lead others to a higher level of group attainment. While many leadership workshops dwell on the leader’s control over the followers, Tim’s curriculum encourages the growth of the group via a nurturing of agreed-upon organizational values that establishes a solid foundation for positive growth in every aspect of the band, orchestra, or choir program.

Saturday November 15

We Dare You!  Be Social. Be Excellent.

Social Excellence is both the art and science of human connection; a social movement changing the world.  Tri-M partnered with the creators of THE SOCIAL EXCELLENCE PROJECT, and the authors of the book, Social Excellence: We Dare You, to design one-of-a-kind curriculum specifically for our music-inspired student leaders.

Participants will experience a powerful day of music-focused community engagement, personal exploration, and interactive social skills training.  To quote from the book, “our ability to connect, determines our ability to lead.”  Therefore all leadership is social.

Music is both a personal and a social experience.  It is the universal language that dares us to dream of a better future, connects us in the present, and reminds us of our past. Students will learn how to leverage their music education skills to have deeper, more meaningful conversations with the world around them.

Expect a fun, engaging, powerful learning experience that students will remember and talk about for a long time. The Social Excellence Project is on a mission to spread human connection – relationships create a more connected world, a more musical world, a truly better world for us all.

Social Excellence [n]: A state of perpetual generosity, curiosity, positivity, and openness to limitless possibility. A desire to intentionally connect with others. The ability to engage in deep, meaningful conversation. Acting in a responsible and respectable manner with high expectations of others. Being authentic and living everyday with integrity as the best version of oneself. Being confident and vulnerable. Being fun and compassionate. Being open, kind, and bold. The highest level of societal participation and contribution.

Kick It In!
Fran Kick illustrates how in any organization or situation there are people who make things happen, people who watch things happen and people who wonder what’s happening. Fran Kick’s upbeat, interactively engaging presentation will bring to life that point with participants while he enthusiastically encourages them to figure things out for themselves. Challenging them to “lead, follow or get out of the way” so they learn how to constructively take the initiative to:

• Pay attention and respond appropriately.
• Lead by example.
• Problem solve as individuals within a group and as a group.
• Demonstrate three different ways individuals respond within a group.
• Increase awareness individually and collectively as a group.

Weekend Package Includes:

  • Friday evening session with Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser
  • Saturday Leadership through Music Education experience with the Social Excellence Project and Fran Kick
  • Bands of American Grand National Finals
