The Indiana Commission for Higher Education is pleased to announce the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, offering up to $7,500 each year of college for high-achieving Hoosier students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five years after graduation. The scholarship was created during the 2016 legislative session, authored by Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis), and received broad bipartisan support.
Beginning fall 2017, the scholarship is available to 200 students across the state who either graduate in the highest 20 percent of their class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT. Students must earn a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete at least 30 credit hours per year to continue earning the scholarship in college. After college graduation, students must obtain a teaching license and teach in Indiana for five consecutive years at an eligible Indiana school or repay the corresponding, prorated amount of the scholarship. The online application for the scholarship opens on November 1 and will close on December 31.
In addition to completing the online application, students will need to be nominated by a teacher and submit a nomination form at the time of application. We encourage students to complete the nomination form and acquire the required information for the application prior to the application opening on November 1.
After the application deadline passes, the Commission will review all applications and select finalists to interview by January 31, 2017. Finalists will interview at one of eight regional interview sites based on the applicant’s county of residence. Interviews will take place on March 11, 18 and 25, 2017.
Indiana is spreading the word about this scholarship opportunity through a promotional campaign, including television, radio and digital ads will beginning October 1. We hope you will partner with us on sharing this opportunity for Indiana’s next generation of teachers. We ask that you encourage students in your schools and local communities interested in the teaching profession to apply when the application opens on November 1, as well as encourage your teachers to promote this opportunity to their students.
