You Want Me to Teach Theory?!:A College Teorist’s Approach to Teaching Teory through Aural Skills

Pre-college music theory is becoming more and more common. Many choir, band, and orchestra directors are being asked to teach theory, with little prior exposure beyond their own undergraduate training. This interactive session aims to help such teachers, by demonstrating how aural skills can serve as an effective vehicle for teaching written theory. We will: (1) model a set of skills-based activities that introduces a new topic and reinforces old ones, (2) overview several aural and written activities that fow seamlessly out of the first, and (3) consider how the modeled format can be adapted to other topics.
