Colloquium Information

THE CONCEPT: In an effort to identify and encourage future music educators, IMEA has created a professional group for high school students at the annual state convention:  IMEA Honors Future Music Educators Colloquium.

In the Colloquium, high school students are mentored and exposed to various aspects of the profession during the annual IMEA State Convention. The Colloquium is not a performance ensemble, rather, a professional group. The group stays together the entire weekend to gain insight into the music education profession and to facilitate discussion.

2011 Dates:  Jan. 20-22, 2010 (Thurs/Fri/Sat)
2011 Cost:  TBA

ELIGIBLE STUDENTS
Students in grade 10, 11, or 12 who are considering a career as music educators. These students are not eligible to participate in an all-state performing ensemble (except IBA All-State Band, which meets in March) during any year they are part of the Colloquium. Students will be eligible to participate in the Colloquium more than once, but preference will be given to those in their first year of participation. This will ensure that the greatest number of potential music educators can take part in the program.

NUMBER OF STUDENTS ALLOWED
There will be a maximum of 30 students with two facilitators/maestros.

THE MAESTRO: The Colloquium members will work with a master teacher (known as the Maestro) throughout the entire weekend, much like the all-state ensembles work with a specific conductor. The Maestro will shepherd the students throughout the weekend, and facilitate discussion about sessions attended and the music education profession in general. The Maestro for 2011 will be announced soon! The participants will meet and be housed at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel, Fort Wayne, IN.

SELECTION TIMELINE:
Application deadline: November 30, 2010
Students are notified: December 9, 2010

APPLICATION PROCESS:

  • Step One: While on the IMEA website, click on the link for the IMEA Honors Future Music Educators Colloquium. Complete the confidential online application.
     
  • Step Two: Post an essay of no more than 500 words describing your aspirations of becoming a music educator.
     
  • Step Three: Ask a music teacher to post a brief confidential recommendation about you through the online Music Teacher Recommendation Form.
